Mount Morris is a small village inside of town of Mount Morris. It is situated in Livingston County and home to around 4,000 residents. Many people are drawn here for the Letchworth State Park. Inside the park is some of the most beautiful sites, such as the Genesee River. The Genesee River has an amazing triple waterfall. Many people frequent this tranquil spot for a breathtaking view at what Mother Nature can truly offer. There is also a terrific scenic gorge that draws people for its inspiring serenity.

Way of life is slower than most cities in New York and that is the attraction to this area. No one is in a hurry to get anywhere, just going along enjoying life. The area explores the beautiful aspects of nature. This town is a great place for bird watching and other peaceful activities. The Mount Morris Dam, is another site that people like to see. This smaller dam, still provides power for most of the lower Genesee Valley. Though this town is just a small 2.0 square miles, it still draws tourists every year for its overwhelming beauty. The next time you are in Eastern, New York, stop by Mount Morris.

If Francis Bellamy, author of the Pledge of Allegiance, and other notable natives of Mount Morris, New York aren-t reason enough to visit this town, there are more reasons why you should travel to enjoy the lovely ambience in the area.

The parks and museum, Veterans Memorial Park, Mount Morris Dam, Finger Lakes Trail System and the 1941 Historical Aircraft Group Museum are some of the recreational areas you and your family can explore. Some of the landscapes are listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. The sites you explore at the parks are indescribable, but stream valleys, old canals, loop trails and annual air shows are few descriptors that may catch your attention. Don-t forget to take your family on a walking tour through the Main Street District, which illustrates, through buildings and homes, how the town has developed during the nineteenth and twentieth century.

Each month Mount Morris holds various events for you and your family to enjoy. The area also has a host of businesses for everyday needs. Visit the antique stores to take home a bit of history with you, in case you are just visiting. For those wishing to stay, contact a contractor or realtor to begin building or moving into your home in this historical New York town. The business district has everything you will need for your short and long-term stay.

I really enjoy history. When I think about all the history that happened in the area that is now Mount Morris Parks I gain a real appreciation for the sacrifices that our ancestors must of had to endure. When I think about how the Native American tribes were here, and the first time that Dutch colonists came to the area, it speaks to my pioneer blood. There have been a lot of different people and nationalities that have traveled along under these same trees over the years. I wonder if any of my distant ancestors passed through this way? There was a guy named Edmund Burke back in 1790 who said: “People will not look forward to prosperity who never look backward to their ancestors.” It’s like that when I think about why Mount Morris Parks can be the best possible, because I am reminded of our history. I think its fun to look at the different styles of the buildings and imagine the time long ago when they were being built. There is a unique character to nearly everything. Imagine all the different people that have looked at the same trees that are here. I wonder how old the trees are?

As we traveled through the Finger Lakes Region of New York State, we had decided to settle for the night in a little village called Mount Morris. In an attempt to stick to our plan of staying in smaller communities, this place was a perfect choice. Mount Morris has a population of approximately 3000, yet there is so much to do. There are several quaint Bed and Breakfast establishments to choose from and the feeling you get from the locals is that of warm welcome.

While we stayed and toured the area, we realized that this friendly little town had so much to offer that we delayed our schedule, allowing an extra day to take in the sights. We visited some of the more than 100 wineries and vineyards that grace the lush rolling landscape. We spent an entire day hiking through Letchworth State Park, otherwise known as “The Grand Canyon of the East”, finding many beautiful photo opportunities within the landscape. The Finger Lakes, a nearby chain of lakes that make this area famous are breathtaking.

This trip proved to be one to repeat next year. We just might make Mount Morris our base camp for our next tour.

Visiting Mount Morris can be exciting and fulfilling if you know what to do. For starters, check out the Mount Morris Dam. Built in 1952, it is the largest of its type in the East. It was built to keep the lower portions of Rochester and other cities from flooding. The visitors center has a large atrium, a theater, and a museum for your enjoyment.

For more excitement, Darien Lake Theme Park is ready to twist and turn you all around with plenty of rides and attractions, and Splashtown’s many water rides will cool you off. You can also try your luck at the Batavia Downs Casino and Racetrack, if you are feeling lucky.

For some history, visit the Francis Bellamy House. Francis Bellamy was the author of the pledge of allegiance at the age of 5. There are also many other historic homes you can view. On the sillier side, you can visit the Jello Museum. Learn the history of this jiggly dessert, and how Bill Cosby influenced its sales.

You can visit the Railway Historic museum, or take one of many wine vineyard tours and tastings.
Mount Morris has plenty to do to keep your whole family entertained.

With the Finger Lakes so nearby you’re bound to head over to one of the region’s three wine trails (Keuka Lake Wine Trail, Seneca Lake Wine Trail, or Cayuga Lake Wine Trail), since the region offers over 100 wineries. But if you’re like a lot of people and fear there may be some “hidden etiquette” to wine tasting we provide the following Seven S’s of Wine Tasting that will serve you well in any setting:

See the wine and notice its color, its clarity, and its intensity.

Swirl the glass slowly to release the aromas that lie dormant.

Smell the wine and discover the qualities and aromas that can be classified in such terms as “spicy, nutty, fruity, floral,” or anything else you can use to describe what you sense. Rest assured, there is never a wrong perception since each person perceives different qualities.

Sip the wine by taking a small amount in your mouth along with a small bit of air on top of the liquid, almost like slurping the wine in. This combined action serves to aerate the wine further releasing more aromas onto your palate.

Savor the wine. Swish it around your mouth making certain it hits every area.

Spit/Swallow the wine. It is perfectly acceptable to utilize the spit buckets that are always (or should always be) provided; especially if you will be driving from winery to winery.

Score the wine with whatever personal scoring system you have created, and make any notes that will help you remember the experience when reflecting back on it.

So, there you have it. That doesn’t sound too intimidating, does it? Just remember the experience is about senses and one sense to not neglect is your sense of fun!

Take a look at some of these resources to make sure you get the best possible experience from your trip.Upstate New York Off the Beaten Path: A Guide to Unique Places (Susan Finch) is a handy 192-page paperback that features the things travelers (and locals) want to see and experience ranging from the best local dining to quirky cultural or historical attractions. From the smallest lakes east of Geneseo to the stunning villages of Cayuga, Watkins Glen, Ithaca, and Skaneateles to the numerous wineries and stunning gorges that add both sophistication and natural splendor, The Finger Lakes Book tells you how to get there, where to stay, where to eat, shop, and play.Finger Lakes Splendor (Derek Doeffinger) illuminates the splendor and beauty of the region in this gorgeous photography collection. From idyllic country scenes featuring whimsical roadside stands and small town festivals to magnificent images of the region’s spectacular waterfalls, gorges, and wineries, this visual journey through a western portion of the Empire State will charm and delight. The book contains a perfect balance of seasons, landscapes, people, and places of western New York.Cobblestone Quest: Road Tours of New York’s Historic Buildings (Rich Freeman and Sue Freeman) includes 17 self-guided tours for observing the history and diversity of unique cobblestone buildings. Learn why, during a mere 35-year span in the middle of the 19th century, approximately 700 cobblestone structures were erected within a 65-mile radius of Rochester, New York, and nowhere else. Many have endured the test of time and stand today as monuments to human ingenuity. On the tours you’ll view a diversity of cobblestone buildings, including homes, farmhouses, barns, stagecoach taverns, smokehouses, stores, churches, schools, factories, and more. Each cobblestone building is a unique work of folk art, created by local craftsmen. Enjoy the tours by car, motorcycle or bicycle.
