When one thinks of snow skiing the mind typically runs to states like Colorado as having the most to choose from. But guess what? New York actually has more ski areas than any other state in the country; so if you’re planning a visit to Mount Morris during the winter months you may want to make sure you schedule some time to visit a ski spot (or two).
Belleayre has a top elevation of 3429 feet, a vertical drop of 1404 feet, a skiable terrain of 171 acres and eight lifts. The average snow fall is 120 inches, the longest run 0.9 miles, and the area has been open for 62 years.Bristol Mountain has a top elevation of 2200 feet, a vertical drop of 1200 feet, a skiable terrain of 160 acres and six lifts. The average snow fall is 60 inches, the longest run 2.0 miles, and the area has been open for 47 years.Gore Mountain has a top elevation of 3600 feet, a vertical drop of 2300 feet, a skiable terrain of 400 acres and 13 lifts. The average snow fall is 150 inches, the longest run 3.7 miles, and the area has been open for 47 years.Hunter Mountain has a top elevation of 3200 feet, a vertical drop of 1600 feet, a skiable terrain of 240 acres and 11 lifts. The average snow fall is 120 inches, the longest run 2.0 miles, and the area has been open for 51 years.Whiteface Mountain has a top elevation of 4650 feet, a vertical drop of 3430 feet, a skiable terrain of 225 acres and 11 lifts. The average snow fall is 168 inches, the longest run 2.1 miles, and the area has been open for 53 years.
There are a lot more of course, like Mt. Peter, Thunder Ridge, and Windham Mountain to name a few. If you’re up for it and time permits, why not check out a few to see which ones will best suit your level and sense of challenge. And even if you’re not a skier you may want to stop in as you’re touring some of the great state since there’s nothing more enjoyable than a yummy mug of steaming hot cocoa while watching skiers swish their time away!
